Visual Supports For Trying New Foods

Many children with autism face issues with food and eating.  Sometimes this is due to rigidity and the need for routine/sameness.  Other times, it can be due to sensory issues that make tolerating textures and smells of many foods impossible.  I've used these visual supports, in collaboration with parents and sometimes an occupational therapist to help introduce new foods.  It is important to talk to parents before implementing a technique like this because some families bring their child to a therapist for the eating challenges and you definitely don't want to do anything that would conflict with that therapy!  ALWAYS talk to parents first and never use these visuals in an aversive way.  Eating and trying new foods is already stressful enough.  Make it fun and be super supportive!
